Facilities Management is often viewed as something that begins when a building is completed. The construction team finishes the project. The keys are handed over. The Facilities Management team takes responsibility. Maintenance requests begin arriving. But by then, many of the decisions that determine the facility's operational performance have already been made.

When Asset Owners do not clearly specify the information they need, consultants and contractors are left to interpret those requirements for themselves. The consequences may not become apparent until years later. By then, the project team has moved on, but the Asset Owner and Facilities Management team are left to deal with the consequences.

An Asset Owner that invests heavily in physical infrastructure but fails to define and assure the information required to manage it is leaving a significant part of that investment unprotected.
